First of all I wanted to thank you for all the hard work and research you put into your articles. I don’t really buy anything for my kids anymore without consulting your website first. I just have a question about the babo botanicals baby lotion. One of the ingredients is emulsifying wax. From my understanding this is not a natural ingredient and some people argue that it is toxic. Emulsifying wax is rated 4 on the skin deep database which I find concerning since a product (babo baby lotion) containing an ingredient rated a 4 is verified by the ewg. Shouldn’t all the ingredients be 0-2? What are your thoughts on this? Is there any way to verify that babo uses vegetable based oils rather then petroleum oils to derive the wax?

Thank you so much for your time!

Karolina

Bathing less, as in once a week should not cause any diseases 🙄
I shower nightly as I work in a dental office, but most of us would benefit from not bathing daily as it would help retain moisture and help maintain beneficial skin flora. Not bathing daiiy doesn’t mean you don’t wash your hands, face or any other body parts that might need cleaning.

I am wondering the same as Kelly! I used the Acure bare baby for a while but read they were discontinuing the baby line. So I switched to the acure simply unscented instead…but that too is now impossible to find. Whole Foods and Amazon used to readily carry it but not anymore. Very frustrating. Now I see the same occurrence with Eco-Me laundry detergent. Every favorite of ours. Super depressing.

Hi Megan,
John here from Gimme the Good Stuff…
Thanks for the kind words about our work and website.

Unfortunately the Puracy line does not appear to qualify as “Good Stuff”.

BENZISOTHIAZOLINONE is a skin lung and eye irritant. It is also associated with allergic reactions and has immunotoxicity/ecotoxicology concerns.

“Natural Fragrance” is a very broad term that can obfuscate what is actually in their “proprietary” blend. Generally speaking, anything with the word “fragrance” is suspect for containing phthalates and I could not help but notice that when they list what is NOT in their products, they do not list phthalates. That is a big concern.

PHENOXYETHANOL has a fairly high concern for organ system toxicity.

TOCOPHERYL ACETATE is associated with allergies, immunotoxicity, cancer and ecotoxicology.

Puracy, at first glance, looks exactly like the reason we started Gimme the Good Stuff. It is marketed directly to folks who wish to avoid concerning chemistry but, in fact, has a fair amount of concerning chemistry. Remember that no amount of nontoxic ingredients in a product erases the toxic ones.

You can contact me directly at john@gimmethegoodstuff.org to discuss this further. I’d be happy to help you (and thus your patients) find the Good Stuff.

Best,
John

These are their ingredients for their baby lotion: Aloe Barbadensis (Organic Aloe Juice) Leaf Extract*, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Glyceryl Stearate, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Theobroma Cacao (Organic Cocoa) Seed Butter*, Citrus Nobilis (Mandarin Orange) Peel Oil, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Oil, Lonicera Caprifolium Flower and Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Citral**, Limonene** and Linalool** * Certifed Organic ** Component of Natural Essential Oil

This will cause skin problems, among other health concerns.

“Fluoride is a highly toxic substance. … In terms of acute toxicity (i.e., the dose that can cause immediate toxic consequences), fluoride is more toxic than lead, but slightly less toxic than arsenic. This is why fluoride has long been used in rodenticides and pesticides to kill pests like rats and insects.

How do you feel about Kiehl’s Mom & Baby Moisturizing Cream? I use a lot of their products on myself (and especially love their ultimate hand salve) so am considering using this on baby. There’s a long list of long-named ingredients but they all seem to check out on EWG’s cosmetics database, with a small exception for Oryza Sativa Bran Oil, which has potential for pesticide contamination. I’ve contacted Kiehl’s to ask about it, but thought you might have an opinion. Thanks!

And in the winter, my legs and arms become dry as well, and I like to have something on hand to moisturize.

I completely disagree about bathing once a weekly be unsanitary. I have 4 children under 7. Never had hand foot and mouth and I only bathe them once a week, and wash hair less frequent then that. Hand and face washing we do very often. My newborn is 2 months and I have only washed her 3X. Once with soap in bath, twice with bath and warm water and wash cloth. All have good skin and we are never sick. No colds or flus in the last year! Cheers

Calendula is listed as a toxic item for pregnant women so it’s confusing that many of the baby items have this and EOs but yet those are listed as problematic for pregnant mamas.

I have to say that you are a good person, and thank you for your hard work so that I learned a lot, but I still need your help.
Well, I tried some baby skin products for my 2 year old daughter who has a very sensitive skin, but I am so disappointed at those stuffs, and feel so sorry for my little one. Recently, I have met a new brand, 100% pure. The brand claim that 100% natural and 100% cruelty-free, all products are completely, 100% free of artificial colors, artificial fragrances, synthetic chemical preservatives and all other toxins. They produce skincare not only for adults but also for babies.
I would be grateful if you could check whether the product is good or not for babies.
Any comments will be much appreciated.

I’ve been looking at Babo Botanicals Miracle Moisturizing Baby Cream or California Baby Calendula Moisturizing Cream. Our little one gets a small rash on her face following bath time, I think it’s like an eczema. Antibiotic ointment clears it up but I’m looking for a healthier, more natural alternative.

Shea Moisture is for the most part Good Stuff, and I just took a quick look at the Aleva wipes and didn’t love what I saw (PEG chemical, for one). Baby Mantra is fine (although definitely not 100% natural).

In lotion, in mom’s mascara and foundation (which can be transferred to baby) lead in many lipsticks- lead transferred to baby via mom’s kisses. Be aware be educated and…call the senate so they will pass the bill that’s been drawn up! for more info check out my website http://www.beautycounter.com/andreapr... or ask me about it. Thank you for the response!

From the easily accessible lotions “Shea Moisture Raw Shea Chamomile & Argan Oil Baby Healing Lotion” seems to be good. Earth mama has good lotions but as mentioned before they just don’t score 0 on EWG, in fact non of the baby lotions do. From online stores Terressentials have an organic baby line but unfortunately they’re not rated on EWG. If you have any thoughts on that brand as well as Shea Moisture, would be nice to hear them. While I understand you can disagree on certain points with EWG, you do
use them as a point of reference, so it can get confusing for your readers to see something that’s rated highly by you to be rated poorly there.

While EWG is an incredible resource for the research we do here at Gimme the Good Stuff, I don’t always agree with their assessments. Sometimes I like a brand that they do not, and vice versa. While we mostly agree on which products are bad and which are good, there are exceptions. Did you have specific lotion brands in mind you would like to recommend? Thanks for your comments!

I think it’s Okay Stuff. You can see here that EWG gives it a moderately hazardous score: https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/product/592817/Tom's_of_Maine_Baby_Lotion%2C_Lightly_Scented/
However, the highest score comes from “fragrance,” which EWG has wrong (Tom’s baby lotion is naturally scented).

I think this is probably the lotion you mean? https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/product/574234/Babo_Botanicals_Moisturizing_Baby_Lotion%2C_Oatmilk_Calendula
EWG gives it a 3 out of 10, and the only ingredients that score higher than a 2 are emulsifying wax and potassium sorbate. In this case of the former, EWG is rating “emulsifying wax” as a 4, when what this lotion contains is “vegetable emulsifying wax NF.” These are in fact two different ingredients, and the NF version is less concerning. Potassium sorbate is a food-grade preservative that I wouldn’t want in my food, but which doesn’t worry in skincare products, especially in very small concentrations. All this said, Babo is not 100% natural, and if you want something that has fewer ingredients and is more natural–but still feels like a lotion rather than an oil/balm–I love this: https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/store/farmaesthetics-nourishing-lavender-milk/

What are your thought on Mom of 11 Kids No Time For Eczema? My son suffers from eczema on his chest and this is the only natural ointment we have found to work on him (we’ve tried everything else from coconut oil to switching to laundry soap to Sierra Sage, etc). My only concern is it contains Thuja, which I’ve read might be neurotoxic?

Thanks for your great research!

I’d consider it Good Stuff (don’t love dimethicone, but otherwise no problematic ingredients).

We have not yet done a thorough review of baby oil. One safe brand that people love is Beautycounter’s: http://www.beautycounter.com/suzanneweaver-goss?goto=kids%2Fbaby%2Fbaby-soothing-oil.html

Both Honest Co. and Shea Moisture have ingredients that basically check out as Good or at least Okay Stuff.

That is actually not true. My son suffered from eczema and the dermatologist as well as the pediatrician all recommended only bathing him once a week or “if needed”. They specifically said babies hardly get dirty and the constant soap/water dries out their skin

I’m not sure where this reviewer is getting his/her info. There is no evidence to suggest that glucose oxidase nor lactoperoxidase are carcinogenic. You can check EWG’s Skin Deep database for more info on both of these ingredients.

“I went out of my way to find a lotion that has nothing like chemicals or carcinogens. This product has two ingredients; lactoperoxidase and glucose oxidase which are both preservatives. Lactoperoxidase creates hydrogen peroxide when used and was thought to kill bacteria back in the 90’s. In fact there is little to NO evidence of this chemical ever being tested for ANY reaction on humans! It basically creates “free radicals” that cause cancer. Glucose oxidase has the same situation going on with it; No data on it anywhere in cosmetics! To hear that something in your lotion is carcinogenic just makes me mad! I am a mother of two and I have never found a lotion that was actually worth it including this one! All of my information is brought to you by google search and wikipedia.”

What do you think about this review?

Actually it looks like they have an old formula and a new one. I am currently speaking in regards to the “Babo Botanicals Moisturizing Baby Lotion”. Is it true that there is an old formula and the one you have above is a newer one?

Thanks Maia,

I have a question regarding Babo Botanicals for I am finding that it is on Skin Deep rating of 3..http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/search.php?query=babo+botanicals+moisturizing+baby+lotion
