Perhaps they’ve recently changed the ingredient list?

Can’t imagine how long it took you to search so many things! I am constantly doing that and now with your help it is easier! Thanks!
BTW…I tried Free N Clear Shampoo…it is …well…free and clear. Hard to find a shampoo that does not have cocamidoproply betaine and this one does not along with free of other things we hate. I am very careful what I put on my hair/scalp since I had seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp. It was a mild case but it woke me up to all the stuff in shampoos and hair dyes. (I use Naturtint Hair Color….has less chemicals than most)
Anyway ..thought I would share. Thanks, again and you too “stay sane.”

Hi Jennifer, Great questions. I am also partial to a no poo method. At first I only shampooed weekly but now I don’t use any at all and it seems to work for me, just warm water. We would love to find some shampoos that are free of plastic. Most shampoos and conditioners come in plastic bottles unfortunately.

1) what are good shampoos without any plastics, that are totally eco everything, and biodegradable?
2) there is no mention here on the website about healthy, eco friendly, good conditioners. Are there any that are also plastic-free, and biodegradable?

Thanks!

I have tried many kinds of shampoos and conditioners, some with “good stuff” and some with “bad stuff”. Some of the natural shampoos or conditioners help my scalp somewhat but dry my hair. I am in my sixties so I try not to wash my hair more than twice a week and have been told that my hair is healthy, just need some help with my scalp. Diet does make a difference but I still would like to find a gentle shampoo and conditioner to help. Can you make any suggestions? Thank you.

Just wanted to say that, based on what I read in the article as well as the comments thread, I just ordered a buuuuunch of ACURE products. Looking forward to trying them. I’ve used Monat for the last two years and it did regrow some of the hair I lost after having my third baby. However, I’m noticing that it’s breaking off like crazy. It’s become dry and fragile. Never a problem I’ve had before. It’s super expensive and I’m bummed to throw out the collection of products I’ve built up, but I really don’t feel good about using the stuff any more! Again, thanks for your research and recommendations.

Monat is awesome! I actually signed up to be a distributor right after I tried it the first time. I will say I did experience detox after a week or so – as my scalp was getting rid of all the junk built up. After that, I still can’t believe how much my hair has grown or how soft it is now. And not frizzy! That was the real issue. It really is an amazing line. But I will caution you that you need to speak with someone who can customize it for you. It’s not one-size fits all. You’ll get a system custom to your needs that will address you hair goals. All of the products promote growth.

I have used LOMA haircare products off and on for the last three years after being introduced to them by my longtime hair stylist—ten years. I have also used Inner Sense hair products prior to LOMA and still supplement with Inner Sense Leave-In Conditioner largely because Inner Sense does not contain any silicones, although the Inner Sense Shampoos are too irritating for my scalp and the LOMA Nourishing Shampoo is hands down the mildest and least irritating to my scalp of any shampoo I have used in the last 15 years. LOMA also makes a DEEP CONDITIONER which is silicone free and can be used as a cleanser on extremely dry scalp/hair. I know LOMA has a few questionable preservatives along with the silicone in the shampoos but the pure essential oils are very mild and effective and anti-inflammatory to sensitive scalps. The whole line is color safe too. Worth a try and probably one of the absolute best of the salon brands out there. A very ethical company as well. 🙂

I used New Wash and loved it – effective in hard water, no itchy scalp, one and done, etc. The only caveat I have for that product is that if you have fine, low porosity hair then build-up is likely to be an issue (as it was for me) due to the use of Behentrimonium Methosulfate – which is a cationic conditioning agent (i.e. a quaternay ammonium salt, a “quat” basically… cationic surfactants are conditioning agents that bond to hair, due to their positive charge).

Cationic surfactants are exceedingly difficult to remove, and standard sulfate shampoos (SLS, etc.) won’t do it… only C12-14/14-16 Olefin Sulfonate and Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate will remove them effectively (e.g. Kinky Curly Come Clean shampoo and a few other brands)… while these aren’t sulfates, they can be every bit as harsh and irritating, especially for sensitive scalps.

Those with thick, coarse, dry, high porosity (often wavy/curly) hair tend to love and do well with cationic surfactants – as they excel at anti-static and frizz control – which is why these ingredients and their variations are now so prevalent in nearly everything.

Cationic surfactants and quats give me instant buildup, and quats in particular cause hairline/scalp breakouts for me. I’ve had to become a diligent label reader and ingredients sleuth in order to find products that meet my standards for safety and efficacy without the inclusions of these ingredients.

I loved everything else about New Wash so much that I’ve been sorely tempted to try the new “Deep” formula – designed to be more cleansing and less conditioning for finer, oilier hair types… but alas: while it has moved significantly further down the ingredients list, the product still had BHMS in it, and will thus result in near-instant build up for me.

So… just something to be aware of… if build up is not generally an issue for you, you might love it!

I was wondering if you had any thoughts on either the 100% Pure brand of shampoos and conditioners or using castile soap as a shampoo– I have tried the latter with an apple cider vinegar rinse, and my hair has unfortunately come out VERY greasy after using it a few times (and I am prone to greasy hair already). I am on this post today because I was a religious user of shea moisture and some of their products (not all, but the new I solely used) had no chemicals nor preservatives. Hello,

I have been a no sulfate/paraben advocate for years. For the past year, I started weeding out other harsh chemicals as well. I have lots of fine hair, that tends to be oily on the roots, dry on the ends. I used to think it was impossible to find the right kind of products. What I now realize is that I just needed to retrain myself. Forget about what I grew up learning. Thank you for your list. I’ve been using John Masters, so it’s nice to see this on your list.
Have you looked at Plaine Shampoo/Conditioner? I believe that is what they are called. I would love to know your thoughts on them?

I personally have dealt with dry scalp for many years. I have used everything on this planet. The only 2 shampoo’s which worked for me completely are mane and tail and loreal ever sleek. Over the years I have researched the toxins in 90 percent of our soaps, shampoo, etc and it’s no wonder people get ill. So sad. Recently developed rashes, hives, allergies to some of these, so I am derermined to finding the safest products that will work for me. Sometimes, I find a product better than all the others I have tried, but I have an allergy to a natural ingredient, like coconut oil, etc. with some of my allergies, like nickel.

RE: A toxic free Shampoo and Conditioner which contains Biotin (and any other ingredient that may help with 63 yr young male hair thinning, etc, etc!) This is how I discovered your site while researching very long hours on the topic. Then, I looked at the ingredients of my Shampoo 🙁 (Matrix: Biolage) not good! But, I wondered why I didn’t see “BIOTIN” (or other things that claim to help with hair growth, etc.) in any of the great brands you’ve rec’md or featured on your site? “HELP!!” HaHa! Thx, and looking fwd to all the great resources on you site! TY! Paul

I came across your site as I was searching for a clean shampoo and conditioner after having used Aveda for a long time. I’m disappointed with Aveda’s ingredient list and was considering John Masters shampoo. However, when I went to the John Master’s website, I saw they use sodium benzoate in their shampoo….you mentioned above they did not, so I was disappointed to see it there. I am ready to change shampoos, but am unsure of what product is completely free of harmful chemicals/toxins.

You are eating sodium benzoate as a preservative in many packaged foods – probably not nearly as big a concern putting it on your hair and washing it off. As the article noted “food grade”, so that is why it is on the “good” list.

I’m a 60 year old mom of 3 and grandmother of 5. I have been recently diagnosed with contact dermatitis mainly allergic to formaldehyde and methylchoroisothaizolinone. I am desperately seeking shampoos, conditioners, liquid soaps, cosmetics, and household products (clothing detergent, dryer sheets, etc) that I can use without these 2 preservatives. It’s very difficult as i am so unfamiliar with this process and am having difficulty locating them on line. Can anyone help? So much to learn and so hard to deal with the pain of the dermatitis as it is on my hands. Luckily my husband does most of the cleaning and dishes but love to cook and entertain but has taken all the pleasure out of it. Wearing gloves doesn’t really help much. I appreciate anyone’s advice!!!!

There are so many swimmer’s shampoos but I’m not sure how safe they are. On the other end, I wouldn’t want a shampoo that may be natural, but doesn’t get out the chlorine.

Hi Peggy, I cannot answer as to why the 2 previous posters didn’t respond. I can assure you that Independent Market Partners do not get paid for reviews. I’m sure they fell in love with their results, value non-toxic ingredients and became distributors like I did. Our company training does not promote spreading your website link profusely as it DOES perpetuate skepticism for all direct sales and causes mistrust. Please reach out if you still have any questions or concerns regarding the company or products: I’m happy to help.

I am curious about a brand I’ve recently bought shampoo and conditioner from at Whole Foods, it’s called “North American Hemp Co”. On their website you can find lists for each of their products, but to save you a little bit of time I’ve copied the one for the shampoo I now use in the hope that you might be able to help me out. One thing I found odd was “flavour” as an ingredient, so I’ve sent them an email about that… We shall see what they say.

Here are the listed ingredients:
Aqua, Sodium C14-16 olefin Sulfonate, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycol Sterate, Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil, Glycerin, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Orange (Citrus Aurantium Dulcis) Oil, Flavour, Pomegranate (Punica Granatum) Extract, Grape (Vitis Vinifera) Seed Extract, White Pine Bark (Pinus Strobus) Extract, Green Tea, (Camellia Sinensis) Leaf Extract, Ginseng (Panax Ginseng) Extract, Chamomilla, Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Algae Extract, Bearberry (Arctostaphylos Uva Ursi) Extract, Coneflower (Echinacea Angustifolia) Extract, Licorice (Glycyrrhiza Glabra) Root Extract, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Citric Acid

Also does it leave a strong lemony smell?

I would like to try out New Wash by Michael Gordon, as they claim to lengthen the time between washes greatly (and that always appeals to a mom of young kids, you can shower more often cuz it doesn’t take as long!). Ingredients are below:

I used the Beauty and the Bees Tasmania bar soap and I love it! Bar soaps take about a month of use before your hair responds favorably. I will say that they get used up faster than a liquid soap, making it a pricier option.

Chagrin Valley also makes fantastic shampoo bars – there are tons to choose from and I have used them for about 5 years now. They are completely natural, very gentle, lather a lot, and smell great (unless you get one without essential oils).

Hi there! I am afraid I may not be much help here, as I am definitely not a hair professional. My husband uses Acure shampoo and that’s it. For dandruff issues, you could try this one: http://amzn.to/2hMG1li. In fact, if you could find a local salon that uses John Masters products they might be able to recommend a good regimen for you.

Problem – I’m a 28 year old guy currently using the head and shoulders hydrating shampoo for my hair but my scalp is very itchy and I’m getting small boils on my scalp. I also have a dry hair/dandruff /dry scalp/hair fall/hair thinning issue. If I skip washing my hair for a week I start getting dandruff/excess hair fall/hair thinning.

Questions –
1] Which hair products I should use to keep my hair healthy and those that promote hair growth/volume/stop thinning..for shampoo/conditioner as well as any other hair products for days between shampooing. I shampoo twice a week as of now and want to go for chemical free/vegan hair products.

2] Which brand does your husband use?

I would appreciate your help very much as I’m totally lost with so many products and harmful/non-harmful ingredients.

Thanks a ton!

After being diagnosed with breast cancer I tried everything! But my hair was feeling gross I finally found Monat which also had 3rd party clinical studies proving regrowth and follicle strength which I really needed, my hair honestly had never felt so healthy and thick too! You can check it out here http://134430@mymonat.com or context me for more info

I just took a look, and while it’s not natural by any stretch, the ingredients don’t look bad. It does contain a few I’m not crazy about, like phenoxyethanol.

I personally don’t worry about the tiny amounts of these essential oils in otherwise Good Stuff products, but of course it’s a personal call. You can always go with unscented products if you want to avoid it all together. As for “natural fragrance,” that just means it’s essential-oil based rather than synthetic.

I just started using the Acure clarifying shampoo which I love, but I noticed it contains Rosemary essential oil which I’ve read is not safe for young children. Do you feel that oils in commercial beauty products or cleaning products are concerning?

Also I saw that Acure makes a 4-1 foamer for babies in a citrus scent but it lists “natural fragrance” on the label. What does this mean?

Thank you!!!

Thanks for the shampoo recommendation! I agree about the sulfate part not being necessarily bad, but I try to avoid them because they make my hair really dry. It’s what makes the shampoo sud, but it strips away my hair’s natural oil. Have you heard about soapberry products? Tree to Tub, the website, sell them. I heard about it and I’m interested because it says that it cleans and moisturizes at the same time, so it’s like a shampoo and conditioner at the same time. If you have any info on that let me know.

Do you have an opinion on the wen hair loss scandal? I am interested in trying a new product called “new wash” by “hairstory” but am nervous. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated!
